Medicare Open Enrollment Period: October 15 – December 7, 2024

Don’t miss the deadline!

The Annual Enrollment Period, also known as Open Enrollment, takes place each year from October 15 to December 7. This is the period where if you are already enrolled in Medicare you can make changes to your Medicare plan coverage.

Need help navigating your Medicare plan choices during Open Enrollment?

Remember, you have choices when it comes to your Medicare plan. You may be able to find a plan that costs less money, covers the medications you need, and gives you more flexibility in the doctors you see.

Assess your current plan with a licensed agent at a participating Legacy clinic and get help with any changes you need. During your free, no-obligation Medicare Benefits Review, you can learn about changes to your plan, discuss your needs, and make a confident decision on your Medicare coverage for 2025. Agents are available daily at several Legacy clinics from October 14 – December 7.

Questions to consider:
  • Have your health care needs changed in the past year? (For example, did you experience any injuries that require ongoing care, were you diagnosed with a chronic illness?)
  • Are your doctors still in-network? (Covered providers can change from year to year.)
  • Will your prescriptions be covered under your current drug plan? (Insurance carriers publish their drug list each fall.)
  • Do you need additional benefits? (e.g., dental, hearing, vision, etc.)
  • Will you be traveling a lot next year? (You can avoid high medical bills by making sure your Medicare plan follows you wherever you go.)
  • Have your financial needs changed? (Consider your current budget and out-of-pocket Medicare costs like deductibles, coinsurance and co-payments.)

Changes you may make during Medicare Open Enrollment include the following:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to an Advantage plan or vice versa.
  • Switch to an Advantage Plan where you choose whether to have prescription drug coverage or not.
  • Change from one Advantage plan to another.
  • Join, switch or leave a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
  • Switch to a private insurer.

Considerations during Medicare Open Enrollment:

  • Out of pockets costs: When making your Medicare decisions, consider costs of premiums, deductibles, copayments, and any other payments not covered by Medicare.
  • Prescription drug coverage: Check to see which drugs your plan covers, especially the drugs you currently use or may use in the future.
  • Health care needs: Consider whether upcoming or expected surgeries are covered and whether you would need to switch providers with the plan you choose.
  • Travel plans : Remember that Original Medicare does not typically cover overseas health care costs, so if you plan to travel overseas you may consider enrolling in a supplemental insurance plan.

What is Medicare?

Medicare is health insurance for those who are 65 years and older. However, if you have a disability you may be able to get Medicare earlier.

There are two main options for Medicare (Original Medicare – Parts A & B, and Medicare Advantage – Part C) as well as options for additional coverage (Prescription Drug Coverage – Part D, and Medicare Supplement Insurance – Medigap). Click here to learn about the different types of coverage.
